Census 2000
October 7, 1998 The City of Conyers is pleased to announce that we will participate in a “partnership” program to ensure a successful Census 2000. This partnership is with the United States Department of Commerce Bureau of the Census and will last through the year 2000. The Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program allows the local officials to review the Census Bureau’s list of individual addresses before the Census Bureau deliver census questionnaires. This program builds quality into the census process up front. Why is the census such a big deal? Census 2000 will be the information cornerstone for the next century. Billions of dollars of federal, state and local funds will be spent on thousands of projects across our nation. How and where that money is spent depends of how accurate the census count is. This is our chance to make sure that the new century begins with a complete picture of our community's people, who they are and where they live. For instance, Census 200 data will impact the following: * Apportionment of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. * Establish geographic boundaries of U.S. Congressional Districts and State Legislative Districts. * Allocation of Federal and State funds to States and Localities for programs such as :education, transportation, housing, job training and community development. * Public and private planning. * Used to help establish community goals for funding, using objective information about local conditions and needs. * Used to determine eligibiity of a locality for funding or participation in government programs. Are you interested in earning extra money? An opportunity exists for temporary jobs through the Census Bureau with our local community. To qualify you must be 18 years or older, take a written test of basic shills, agree not to engage in any partisan political activity within 24 yours of performing work, and for males age 18 or older, born after December 31, 1959, you must be registered with selective service. To inquire further call 1-888-325-7733 (toll-free). At present the City of Conyers has assembled a team, completed our training and are ready to tackle the task of reviewing the Census Bureau's master address list for our community and updating it as needed. Stayed tuned! January 11, 1999 The City of Conyers is pleased to announce that we have completed the local update of Census addresses. After two months of both field and master listing varification of addresses the following results emerged. The City’s master address list contained 3255 addresses, of these 41 had to be corrected, 33 had to be deleted for reasons such as demolition or conversion to commercial space, and 31 were proven to be outside our jurisdiction. In addition to the 3255 addresses we were able to capture 724 addresses not previously listed.
